The network of highways that facilitate movement by land from coast to coast in the United States is one of the most developed in the world. It consists of
- Multiple-lane pavements
- Bridges
- Culverts and drainage
- Signing and roadway lighting
- Safety systems such as guard rails, bridge railings, and barriers
- Retaining walls
- Noise walls
Most are comprised partially or fully of metallic parts. There are approximately 583,000 bridges alone in the US, 15% of which are structurally deficient because of corroded steel and steel reinforcements. Annual direct cost of corrosion is estimated at $8 billion.
In 2005, the American Society of Civil Engineers gave a grade of C to America’s bridges, and a grade of D to roads Infracture Report Card.
Single and multiple-mounted sign supports, breakaway supports with various types of slip bases, frangible bases, and post hinging systems are currently galvanized in an effort to prevent corrosion, but this becomes expensive and a time-consuming process for the supplier. AquaArmor® can provide the much-needed corrosion protection for signs and most other metallic products used in the transportation sector.
